Village looking east from behind cottages 1 and 2

Village seen from the hill side

Here the black houses and later fixed roof houses can be seen clearly side by side. The black houses have no chimney, and the smoke from the fire simply seeped out through the thatched roof, or escaped via the door. Roofs were thatched with materials such as heather or straw. The two stone chimneys of the later houses were intended to make them less smoky than the older houses. The dry stone wall construction can be seen in the foreground. Behind the houses the windowless buildings are 'cleitean' which were used to store food and fuel for the winter months.
