The street St Kilda village

St Kilda Main Street

The line of the street can be seen curving around to the left of the image. The nearest house is one of those built in the early 1860s by Sir John Macpherson MacLeod, and others of a similar date can be seen in the left of the image. The building to the left of the main house is a 'black house' and is one of 25 built in between 1836 and 1838, with the financial support of Sir Thomas Acland. These older house walls consisted of two separate stone walls, packed with earth for insulation. The woman seated on the wall in the centre of the image wears a hat with a white band around the edge which indicates that she is married. There is also a detail of the mother and child.
