Minar Kalan at Bukhara
This photograph of the Minar Kalan, a 47m high minaret in Bukhara, was taken by the Scotswoman Ella Christie during her travels in Central Asia in the early 20th century. A favourite method of execution until only thirty years before her visit had been to fling the victims from the top of the tower.
