At the market in Ashkhabad during her travels in Central Asia in the early 20th century, Ella Christie was shocked by the sudden sight of these Khivan/Turkmen sheepskin hats, which she initially thought to be covering the heads of the victims of decapitation! She was relieved to discover that this apparent place of public execution was actually nothing more sinister than a hat-stall, and that her imagination had been playing tricks on her.
