Street in Novy Urgench
During her Central Asian travels in the early 20th century Ella Christie took a short diversion on her journey up the historic Oxus River (now called the Amudar'ya) from Charjou (Chardzhhou) to Khiva to visit the town of Novy Urgench. This place was approached by caiouque ( boat) on a canal traversed by numerous trestle-bridges, and then by a journey of several miles on an arba (cart), one of which can be seen in this street-scene.
