Fingal’s Cave, Staffa, Inner Hebrides

This photograph of the entrance to Fingal’s Cave on the island of Staffa in the Inner Hebrides was taken by Patrick Bailey in July 1987. It illustrates organ-pipe basalt columns topped by a mass of rock, the result of different rates of cooling of basalt lava as it erupted c.60 million years ago.
