History/ScopeProfessor Joy Tivy (1924-1995) was born in Ireland and attended Trinity College Dublin to study geography with botany and geology and took her PhD at Edinburgh. She taught at the Leeds Girls Grammar school during the 1940's. She authored a standard text in Biogeography called, "Biogeography: A Study of Plants in the Ecosphere" and was later asked to become a visiting professor at various European universities. In 1954 she joined the Glasgow University Department of Geography where she stayed until retirement in 1999. Joy Tivy was also a FRSGS (Fellow of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society).
