History/ScopeDr Smith, born in 1920, was a keen hill walker, artist, photographer, traveller and fluent in 7 modern languages. He went to Morgan Academy and graduated from St Andrews University in 1941 with an Honours degree in French and German. During World War Two he saw active service in North Africa, Sicily and Italy and rose to the rank of Lieutenant before being wounded and losing an arm in 1944. He returned to Dundee and gained a University Diploma in Education in 1945. He taught Modern languages at his former school, then as principal teacher at Grove Academy. He continued his linguistic studies and was awarded a Ph.D. by the University of St Andrews in 1951 for his two volume study on "The Language of La Satyre Menippe". He lectured on Modern Languages at the College of Education in Dundee from 1975 to 1981. He was an active member of the RSGS and was chairman of the Dundee Centre from 1978 to 1991. He was made a fellow of the Society in 1990. He died in Dundee in April 2002.
