History/ScopeMargaret Simmons was born in Doncaster in 1919, her father was the head teacher at Arksey Primary School. She studied Geography on a state scholarship at Manchester University then went on to become a teacher of Geography and History, intially at Manchester High School for Girls, then finally as head of Geography at Maidstone Grammar School for Girls. During World War Two she worked at Bletchley Park. In the 1960s she published a geography text book, "The British Isles" which was widely sold. Margaret Simmons was a keen photographer and travelled widely. She was one of the few Europeans allowed into Sikhim and Bhutan. She was the winner of a Goldsmith's Company travelling award and toured Asia. In 2001, Margaret Simmons donated the slide collection of Ruth Way, who was her friend, to the RSGS. She died in 2004.
