• I am External Relations Co-ordinator for our Masters Programme in GIS.
• I am also Director of the GIS Parallel Architectures Lab (GIS-PAL) in Edinburgh.

My research interests include:

• GIS Performance, the benefits of Parallel / Multi-Processing computer architectures and Configurational / Systems Issues relating to GIS
• Database Management Systems
• Terrain Modelling and Elevation, Bathymetric and Terrain Meta-Data
• User Interfaces for GIS and Geographical Databases, including access to spatial data over local and wide area networks, including the use of technologies such as the World Wide Web

• I am Vice Chairman of the Royal Scottish Geographical Society (RSGS) and serve on their Board, Council, the Library & Information Committee and 'Images for All' Project Group
• I served on the Council and the Direct Action Committee of the Association for Geographic Information (AGI) as well as founding and chairing their "Internet Management Group"
• I am a founder member and Vic Chairman of AGI Scotland (the AGI's Scottish Regional Group) and serve on their Executive Group
• I am a founding member of the GIS Research UK (GISRUK) conference series, and currently chair the GISRUK Steering Committee
• I was a member of the Confederation of Scottish Local Authorities (COSLA) GIS Forum
• I was a member of the Advisory Committee of the Registers for Scotland
