5TH SURGE MEETING

April 2104

The 5th SURGE (Scottish Universities' Research in Glacial Environments) meeting was hosted by the School of Geographical & Earth Sciences, University of Glasgow on 22 April 2014. Please read the report for further information on this successful and popular event.

The 6th SURGE meeting will be held at SAMS in November 2014.

Dr. Martin Kirkbride, University of Dundee - 'Late-Holocene and Younger Dryas glaciers in the northern Cairngorm Mountains, Scotland'

Dr. Martin Kirkbride, a member of SAGES Landscape Dynamics theme carried out research using cosmogenic 10Be dating techniques to study the formation of corries in the Cairngorms. In association with Dr. Jez Everest (BGS) and the Cosmogenic Isotope Analysis Facility at SUERC their research indicates a glacier may have survived in the Cairngorms as recently as the 18th Century.

Dr. Michael Singer, University of St Andrews - " Enduring legacy of toxic fan via episodic redistribution of California gold mining debris."

Dr Michael Singer, a member of SAGES Landscape Dynamics theme from the University of St Andrews, carried out this research in California, the paper was published on the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences website.
