Research Interests: I am a Plant Physiologist working on adaptation/acclimation processes in lichens and mosses from polar ecosystems. The central theme of my research is the ecophysiology of stress and its effects on individual organisms and communities with the goal to identify threats that occur with ongoing climate change and human impact. Most of my research is focused on Antarctic environments but my research projects have encompassed the study of biological soil crusts from other habitats like the arctic tundra and landscapes in temperate Europe as well. I study the gas exchange of photosynthesis and respiration, aiming to reveal traits that permit cryptogams to exist in extreme terrestrial habitats and understand how these are affected by changes. My main themes are plant community classifications, eco-physiology and environmental measurements which, together with collaborative work looking at molecular and metabolic changes, help me to elucidate the mechanisms driving changes in polar ecosystems.
