Combining Environmental and Epidemiological modelling: a study of the Health Impacts of Ozone and Heat on Mortality -Workshop

January 13th 2010 10.45 - 14.45

Hosted by the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the University of Edinburgh

Venue: Room 101, Clore Management Centre, Birkbeck College, Malet Street, London, WC1E 7HX (see map, building number 2; nearest tube station is Russell Square)

We are funded by an exploratory award under the joint Environment and Human Health programme1 to assess current and future climate- and air pollution-mediated impacts on human health in the UK. Our focus has been on ozone and heat and their interactions in terms of evidence of impacts on human health. Our research has combined the use of monitor data from the UK air quality network, BADC, and ONS mortality records, with meteorological and atmospheric chemical transport model simulations at a resolution of 5km by 5km across the UK, and future emission scenarios that span a range of possible futures.

Our scientific findings include:

  • Evidence on health impacts of ozone and its threshold
  • Multiple causes of high ozone concentrations that led to air quality exceedances during the 2003 heatwave
  • Considerable changes in ozone exposures in the UK under a range of future emission scenarios

The aim of this workshop is to communicate findings from the research undertaken, and highlight the challenges we faced as an interdisciplinary team of environmental scientists and epidemiologists conducting research to answer key questions that span the environment and human health disciplines. We would like to invite you as scientists and policy makers to this workshop to discuss science needs and uncertainties in the context of climate change, and to find out the main concerns and questions from policy makers and stakeholders.

Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis. Please register your interest by Friday 18th December by contacting Ruth Doherty (ruth.doherty@ed.ac.uk)
