Siccar Point Field Excursion Preview
Equipment
At Siccar Point you will be issued with a worksheet
printed on thin card. You need to bring with you the following items:
Your Field Notebook, which will be collected for
assessment.
An A4 clipboard with some bulldog clips and
elastic bands to keep the card in place. If you do not have a clipboard
you can improvise by cutting up an old ring-binder or similar object.
This item is really important!
A plastic bag to keep the Notebook and Clipboard
dry should it rain. Find a bag big enough to allow you to write in the
Notebook inside the bag, and practice doing so.
A HB pencil for sketches and notes. A pencil
sharpener may be useful.
If you have a hand-lens bring it. You will be
asked to look closely at the grains that make up the rocks. Hand lenses
may be purchased from the British Geological Survey Shop at the
north-west corner of the King's Buildings site.
If you have a compass-clinometer bring it. You
will have the opportunity to measure the amount and direction of dip of
the rocks. Note that ordinary compasses from outdoor shops are not
sufficient - pay the wee extra for the clinometer version.
If you have a personal first-aid kit bring it.
Note that leaders normally carry first-aid equipment, but not pain-killers
such as aspirin or paracetamol.
A packed lunch.
