Calcareous Bands

Locality 5: The traverse from the Old Red Sandstone (Devonian) strata to the Carboniferous reveals layers of calcareous siltstone and conglomerates. Look very carefully at the beds that are largely covered by pebbles and boulders. Your are looking for:

  • Beds of conglomerate with angular clasts of dolomite, and fish scales and spines.
  • A 25 cm thick band containing plant remains and the bivalve Sanguinolites. If you are observant and lucky you might find ostracods and fish scales.

Do not hammer these exposures.
