Volcanic agglomerate by the Queen's Drive
Please stay on the footpath. Car drivers are usually admiring the view! Locality 13: Along the southern part of Queen's Drive there are well exposed volcanic agglomerates consisting of blocks of lava embedded in red ash. They are within the Lion's Haunch Vent. The broken, angular chunks of rock that are characteristic of vent agglomerates are produced by explosive decompression of trapped gasses. |
