Desiccation Cracks
Locality 12: Drying mud shrinks, forming polygonal cracks in the surface. The size of the polygons and the width and depth of the cracks depend on the thickness of the layer of wet mud. The cracks are subsequently filled and covered with new material. The downward projections of the overlying bed are easily broken off during later exposure. The desiccation cracks indicate a subaerial environment at some time during the deposition of the Cementstone Group sediments. |
