Bedding in Camstone Quarry

Sandstone beds dipping east

Locality 12: In Holyrood Park the rocks are tilted approximately eastwards. This is clearly evident in Camstone Quarry, where a sequence of sandstones and shales are exposed. Some of the sandstones contain red nodular concretions which formed near to the surface in seasonally arid conditions - evidence of a subaerial seasonal environment.

[A camstone is a white argillaceous limestone that used to be used for whitening stone door steps and window sills.]
