Information Services Computing Skill Centre Courses

The IS Skills Centre provides a variety of IT training courses and online learning resources for staff and postgraduate students at the University of Edinburgh as well as for members of the general public. Taught courses generally last for a half or full day and take the form of presentations followed by practical exercises. Most courses provide attendees with a workbook to take with them at the end of the day. Courses are free for staff and postgraduates but charges do apply to people from outside the university.

University of Edinburgh Webguide for Staff New to Edinburgh

Provided by the Human Resources service, this webguide is primarily to meet the needs of research staff coming to work here from overseas, but they are a useful resource for any member of staff taking up a post at Edinburgh. The guide provides extensive information on moving to the UK, accommodation, living in Edinburgh, transport, healthcare, banking, tax and schools and childcare.

University of Edinburgh Code of Practice for Management of Research Staff

This Code of Practice for the Management of Research Staff has been has been developed by the Universities' research community for the research community. Contributions have been made by three colleges within the University, Corporate HR, research managers, research staff and those involved in staff development. It is aimed to show the Universities commitment to, and encouragement of, the provision of timely and effective support to research staff and their chosen career paths. The Code of Practice also encourages research staff themselves to take responsibility for the management of their own careers. It is not envisaged to be a prescriptive, 'one-size-fits-all' approach, but rather an impetus and encouragement to Schools and Research Centres to use it in active discussions, and to adapt it for local use and the specific needs of their researchers.

National Research Staff/Postdoc Association of the UK

This Wikia Scratchpad site provides some brief information on the UK Association of Research Staff and is as close as I can find to an official website. There appears to have been an initiative to start an association in 2006 (see Nature and The Scientist articles) but it does not look like it has got off the ground yet. There is also a National Research Staff Association of the UK group on the Nature Network site. Please let the page contacts know if you have any more information on this Association.

National Postdoc Association, United States

The National Postdoctoral Association is a professional association that provides a unique, national voice for postdoctoral scholars in the U.S. The NPA was founded in 2003, with an ambitious agenda to enhance the quality of the postdoctoral experience. The NPA incorporated in the District of Columbia in 2005 as a non-profit organization. Since its founding, the NPA has assumed a leadership role in addressing the many issues confronting the postdoctoral community that are national in scope, requiring action beyond the local level. Key alliances are being forged at all levels, and new standards and policies proposed by NPA are being considered and adopted by federal agencies and research institutions throughout the U.S.
