About these plots
These plots were created from seismic data published by the Icelandic Met Office as part of an ongoing collaboration. They show the number of earthquakes per day in the Katla region. By plotting data from the past year, day to day fluctuations can be seen in the context of longer-term trends.
The 5-day moving average plot (top) smooths out short-term noise. The cumulative plot (bottom) makes it easier to see trends in rate of seismicity as well as the depth at which most events occur. Event counts for small earthquakes can be unreliable so these events have been filtered from the dataset. The effect of this on the overall trend is small.
The plot is automatically updated every night around midnight. Click to enlarge.
