How do you find us?

The Tropospheric Chemistry and Earth Observation Modelling Group

We are a group of staff and students in the School of GeoSciences at the University of Edinburgh who study the Earth's climate using data, models and theory. We are funded by the UK Natural Environmental Research Council, the Leverhulme Trust, the Nuffield Foundation, the UK Space Agency, the European Space Agency, the British Council, the Royal Society, and Microsoft Research.

Our current research addresses the overarching science questions:

What drives observed changes in tropospheric chemistry and how do these affect surface air quality?
What is the geographical location, magnitude and variability of terrestrial fluxes of CO₂, CH₄, and N₂O?
How can we describe human behaviour in climate models?

Tropospheric chemistry. We develop and run a suite of models that test current understanding of tropispheric chemistry and surface processes

Aura satellite. We use satellite observations to test understanding, embodied in models, of atmospheric chemistry and land processes.

$Blackboard and maths scribbling. We also develop theory that eventually is described in models that is tested by data.$

FAAM BAe 146. We lead, coordinate and contribute toward the design and deployment of aircraft experiment to address atmospheric chemistry.

Dalhousie LIDAR. We also use ground-based remote sensing data to sample atmospheric chemistry.

Angus Tall Tower. We use sophisticated Bayesian inference methods to traslate observed variations of atmospheric gases and particles to the understanding emission processes.
