Masters in Geographical Information Science

Welcome to our MSc in GIS! Our programme is a top world-class degree, housed within an institute with a five-star research rating. We offer students the chance to excel in their field of interest under the guidance of internationally recognised staff.

We have recently restructured our programme, so that there are now three streams:
      - MSc GIS
      - MSc GIS Research
      - MSc by Research in GIS & Society

The difference between the MSc GIS and the MSc GIS Research is that the research degree maximises flexibility by minimising required core components and has a greater emphasis on the dissertation. The research degree is aimed at students who wish to progress towards PhD research and/or who have strong existing GIS skills but want to explore in greater depth their own research interests. The MSc GIS taught degree is tailored to students who have their eye on the job market, with core courses that reflect the needs of industry and provide our students with a marketable edge. We now also collaborate with the School of Informatics to teach a new MSc in Geoinformatics for students with a strong informatics background and interest, for which there is funding.

We have a large group of GIS researchers and a significant dedicated GIS computing facility that support our one-year intensive programme, which marries critical theory with the development of strong practical skills. Its unique modular structure enables you to tailor the programme around your interests, while requiring coursework that supports our claim that we produce excellent students with a strong GIS background. Just look at where they end up. Our students are also regular winners of the Association of Geographic Information Student of the Year Prize.

The staff have a wide range of contacts in government and industry, some of whom participate in our courses, and form the basis for real research projects developed by our students. MSc projects are also regularly published in academic professional journals.

The course is supported by the SAAS for Scottish students. We usually have FIVE FULLY FUNDED PLACES for Scottish Students. The Programme is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

The Official Degree Programme Specification (DRPS) can be found here.

Please note, we do not offer any GIS courses through the medium of distance learning. It is our belief that effective GIS professionals are produced through an intensive and supportive educational environment which can only be provided through face-to-face interaction.
