How To: Create Scales and a Key

Vertical Scale

Put this at the left and/or right of the section. Remember to centre align the text with the tick mark. See the Sedimentary Log Vertical Scale How To... for an outline procedure.

Horizontal Scale

Put a scale fragment somewhere below the section, similar to the sort of scale found on any map, showing say 100m intervals up to 1000m.

Key

The only conventions that you should adhere to include:

  • The rock types should be in stratigraphic order with the oldest at the bottom.

  • The colour scheme should be similar to that used on British Geological Survey maps - red for granite, blue for limestone, etc. It would be perverse to transpose colours.

Otherwise you can please yourself where to put the scales and key, and what colours to use.
