Buying storage for your research project

So, you're about to apply for a grant to allow you to engage in some cutting edge science which requires you to store and/or process huge volumes of data.

What do you need to put in your FEC-aware grant proposal?

The way we (the School) usually do our storage (and backup) is by using paired servers with onboard RAID arays, with the two servers located in different buildings to provide a measure of disaster protection.

Another alternative now available is to use storage provided as part of the ECDF (Edinburgh Compute and Data Facility). They are able to realise economies of scale to allow them to provide storage cheaper than the School can - as of March 2011 charges are £290 per TB per year(plus an additional £220 per TB per year in you want it backed up) for storage on the ECDF NAS service.

If your needs are more modest (e.g. you need a hundred GBs of space), we may be able to arrange for you to purchase space on the School's servers. Exact prices will vary depending on exactly how much space you require, how much the data changes, and how long you need to keep it - but is likely to be on the order of a pound per GB of backed up space, per year that you need to keep the data.
