Remote Connections (NX)

NX provides remote desktop virtualization over an encrypted connection. It's like using our local Linux desktop, without actually sitting at your desk.

Connecting

To connect to GeoSciences' remote, linux desktop facility you run nxclient and connect to nx.geos.ed.ac.uk

Make sure a Unix session is selected.

Desktop Configuration

If you manage your own machine, you can download client software from the NoMachine website.

Keyboard mapping

Depending on the version of Operating System you are running, there can be problems with some keyboard mappings. This most often shows as up arrow key taking a screen shot, or the delete key not working.

This can be resolved by running a command inside your NX session:

  • Open a terminal (e.g. xterm, gnome-terminal) and type:
  • setxkbmap -model evdev -layout gb

This will need to be done each time you use NX.

Sometimes the up-arrow key still tries to take a screenshot. This can often be resolved by assigning a different key to that function:

  • From the menu choose System | Preferences | Keyboard Shortcuts
  • Find the "Take a Screenshot" item and enter a new key combination (we suggest Ctrl - Print Scrn).
This should only need to be done once.

IceWM

The default NX session is now IceWM. Gnome, KDE and XFCE all have memory leaks and will eventually grind the nx server to a halt. To avoid this fate we have made IceWM the default window manager - you'll get it even if you choose one of the others. If you really, really insist on using something else you will need to setup a custom nx session:

  • select custom session
  • select "run the following command" and enter /usr/bin/gnome-session
  • tick "new virtual window"
However, if you do not use IceWM remember to terminate your session to avoid memory leaks taking over the nx server.

MacOS X client

We have reports that the NoMachine client doesn't work with MacOS "Lion". We suggest you use the OpenNX client instead: http://opennx.net/download.html
