I started my PhD project in September 2009 having retired from a professional career in finance to pursue an academic interest in geology

I am married with 3 children, all currently undergraduates. My wife, Susan, is currently working to support 4 students

Our interests are mountains (climbing and cycling) and water (kayaking and adding to cask-strength whisky)

I am the Treasurer of Child Survival in Malawi (Scotland), a charity that supports local orphan feeding projects in Malawi, a Director of LCDS, a charity that promotes education standards in Sub-Saharan Africa, a Director of the Killin & Ardeoniag Community Trust and a Council Member of Addaction Scotland, a part of Addaction UK
