First off, the PhD work mentioned here has been brought to you by the the letters G,M,T and F, and the number 90. In other words...

The Linux distribution formerly known as Mandrake.

For a while, this was the only fully functional free F90 compiler around (that I could find).

GMT. Does nearly everything in terms of geo-visualisation. Good for some processing too apparently (If you're a Python user you might want to check out PyGMT by Magnus Hagdorn).
