Gary McClean

I am a second year PhD student at the University of Edinburgh supervised by Dr Saran Sohi (University of Edinburgh), Dr Kate Heal (University of Edinburgh) and Dr Gary Bending (University of Warwick). My project is entitled 'Biogenic carbon sequestration under lignocellulosic energy crops and the effect of biochar amendment on soil-atmosphere exchange of greenhouse gases'. The main objectives of this study are: 1) to examine the effects of land conversion to lignocellulosic energy crops on soil carbon dynamics and 2) to assess the potential for biochar to (i) reduce greenhouse gas emissions (CO2, N2O and CH4) from the soil to the atmosphere and (ii) moderate carbon production, stabilisation and decomposition. This PhD forms a component of Work Package 2 of the NERC funded Carbo-BioCrop consortium project (http://www.carbo-biocrop.ac.uk).
