Research:

[Prof. Peter Furley] Retired as Professor of Biogeography within the School of GeoSciences. Continuing as Professor Emeritus and Senior Honorary Professorial Fellow. Principal research interests include tropical soils particularly soil-vegetation associations and land development issues in the humid tropics with an emphasis on savanna landscapes. Biographical note (2016) My work has centered on tropical biogeography, linking environmental issues to development. I studied Geography at Oxford, specialising in Geomorphology, with a doctorate in Soil Science. My principal research interests have concerned the evaluation of tropical soils and the relationship between soil properties and plant communities. Most of this work has been concentrated in the Neotropics, notably in Central America and in parts of South America, particularly Brazil. Over the past decade, the focus has been mostly on world savannas. Over the past 40 years, I have been leader or co-leader of numerous expeditions and research projects throughout the tropics focusing on issues of land use and development as well as on fundamental problems within biogeography and ecology. After moving to Edinburgh, I have had the opportunity of working in many parts of the tropics, including China, Australia, various regions of Africa, India and especially Nepal, with a long term association in South and Central America. I was a Foundation Professor in the Ecology Department of Brasilia University and have worked in the Universities of Zimbabwe (Harare), Yangling (Shaanxi) and for over 40 years in Belize (formerly the Chairman of the UK-Belize Association). I am currently involved with a Darwin Initiative project in Belize, assessing the lowland savannas from the point of view of their soil resources, ecological significance and their conservation.
