Seismic Workstation Facility

With industry and University finance and the generous support of Schlumberger Geco-Prakla and Seismic Micro-Technology (SMT), John has developed a seismic workstation cabapility in the Grant Institute. Although housed in a secure environment, the facilities are available to research students and undergraduates undertaking subsurface projects.

The hardware associated with the seismic laboratory consists of 7 Windows workstations and 7 linux, dual-core workstations

All machines are networked to a central data server by Gigabit ethernet, with the central server providing 4.5 TB of disk space.

The workstations provide the primary access to the software and data for undergraduate and masters students. The software and data can also be accessed by authorised users from other parts of the School of GeoSciences Network through any PC, Linux workstation, or X display device. Staff and PhD students generally access the software and data from machines on their desks.

The software available to the research group currently consists of the following items:

Linux based: Current operating system - Linux SL5; Current version of Geoframe (the seismic interpretation software) 4.2; There are 2 licenses for Schlumberger Geco-Prakla GeoFrame

PC based: Current Operating system - Windows XP SP2; 10 licenses for Schlumberger Petrel v2008.1; 20 licenses for SMT The Kingdom Software v8.1

Support for the workstations and the software is provided by the School of GeoSciences computing team, one of whom, Chris Place, is charged with overseeing the facility.
