Nov 2010: I am taking over from Richard Harrison as chair of the Mineral Physics special interest group of the UK Mineralogical Society Min Soc web site

Nov 2010: Successful application to the UoE Moray Endowment Fund (£1798) for seed money for a project entitled "Engineering novel ceramic pigments: new applications for high pressure research". This builds upon an existing collaboration (high pressure investigation of pyroxenes) with Prof. Mario Tribaudino, University of Parma.

Feb 2011: Successful NERC grant application "In-situ X-ray tomographic imagine under extreme conditions: a proof of concept study" with Ian Butler. NERC link here

15th June 2011: Giving a talk at the UoE Talbot-Rice gallery as part of the 'Objects of Education' exhibition, which features teaching material from the Cockburn Museum collection, entitled " Reading the Earth: Teaching geology past and present". Talbot Rice gallery slides

October 2011: As part of the Edinburgh Beltane project (organised by Jenny Rodgers) I have filmed a short video on 'why I am a scientist'. Eventually, videos of other CSEC members will be posted on the CSEC website "Why I'm not really a geologist"

December 2011: Nominated for another EUSA teaching award (4th nomination in 3 years....not bad going!). Distressingly, they have changed the design and inadvertently ruined the display of badges in my office!

January 2012: First paper of the year published on the 4th January (ok, print version came out on the 4th....its was available on-line in September!)....but still, new record!

February 2012: Co-I on a successful EPSRC grant "SAFE Barriers - a Systems Approach For Engineered Barriers", EP/I036427/1. ESPRC link here
