Publications

I joined the Institute of Geography at Edinburgh in 2005. Previously, I was Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the Institute of Environment, Philosophy and Public Policy at Lancaster University and Associate Professor of Philosophy at Brooklyn College-CUNY. I am President of the International Society for Environmental Ethics and Co-Editor of Environment and Planning D: Society and Space. I serve on the Executive Committee of the British Society of Aesthetics and the Landscape Research Group's Board of Directors.

Research

My research interests lie at the interface of philosophy and cultural geography, and include: Environmental Aesthetics and Environmental Ethics, especially: landscape and aesthetic values; aesthetics of nature in the history of philosophy; Kant's aesthetics; aesthetics of the everyday; emotion, imagination, and environment; aesthetics and nonhuman animals.

In Aesthetics of the Natural Environment (2003), I develop a theory of the 'integrated aesthetic' which integrates subjective and objective approaches to aesthetic experience, judgment and value, and argue that non-instrumental aesthetic valuing of nature potentially grounds an environmental ethic based in respect for nature. More recently, I have written on aesthetic, ethical and ontological problems in relation to quasi-natural/modified environments and cultural landscapes (gardens; environmental, land and ecological art; agriculture).  I am currently working on a book, The Sublime: Aesthetics, Ethics and Nature, which argues for the relevance of the sublime to contemporary issues in aesthetics, e.g., aesthetics of nature, ugliness, tragedy, and the relationship between aesthetics and ethics. This research is feeding into a new project, a critical study of aesthetics of nature in the history of philosophy, focused through contemporary issues and problems in environmental aesthetics and ethics.

My research has been funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the British Academy, the Finnish Academy, the Carnegie Trust, and the British Council.
