Publications

I joined the Institute of Geography at Edinburgh in 2005. Previously, I was Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at the Institute of Environment, Philosophy and Public Policy at Lancaster University (1994-2004) and Associate Professor of Philosophy at Brooklyn College-CUNY (2004-2005).  I'm also an Academic Associate in the Philosophy subject area at Edinburgh. Recently, I served as President of the International Society for Environmental Ethics for three years, and I have been Secretary, Treasurer, and an Executive Committee member of the British Society of Aesthetics. I sit on various editorial boards, including Environmental Values, Ethics, Policy, and Environment, and Philosophical Quarterly, and I'm a former Associate Editor and Co-Editor of, respectively, Environmental Values and Society and Space.

 Research

My research interests move between contemporary and historical approaches in aesthetics and environmental philosophy. Specific interests include: environmental aesthetics; environmental ethics; aesthetic experience and value; Kant and eighteenth-century philosophy; the relationship between aesthetic and ethical values; aesthetics of the everyday; theories of imagination and emotion; and animal studies.

In Aesthetics of the Natural Environment, I develop a theory of the 'integrated aesthetic' which integrates subjective and objective approaches to aesthetic experience, judgment and value, and argue that non-instrumental aesthetic valuing of nature potentially grounds an ethical approach based in respect for nature. More recently, I have written on aesthetic, ethical and ontological problems in relation to quasi-natural/modified environments and cultural landscapes, such as gardens, environmental, land and ecological art, and agriculture.  My work in contemporary environmental philosophy has also contributed to developing an understanding of aesthetic value for the UK National Ecosystem Assessment (2011) and its current 'Follow-on Phase'.

I have just completed a new book, The Sublime in Modern Philosophy: Aesthetics, Ethics and Nature, which reassesses the eighteenth-century sublime and argues for its relevance to recent debates in aesthetics and environmental ethics. This research is feeding into a new project, a critical study of aesthetics of nature in eighteenth-century philosophy. 

My research has been funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, the British Academy, the Finnish Academy, the Carnegie Trust, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the British Council. During the 2011-2012 academic year I held a Laurance S. Rockefeller Faculty Fellowship at Princeton University's Center for Human Values.
