Research Interests

I am working in the Tropospheric Chemistry and Earth Observation Modelling Group in the School of GeoSciences.

I am currently studying methane in the atmosphere using GEOS-Chem, a 3-D global chemical transport model driven by assimilated meteorological fields. I am using the model together with measurements of methane from ground-based flask networks and satellites (GOSAT, IASI) and an ensemble Kalman filter to better constrain methane emissions.

My work is supported by the National Centre for Earth Observation (NCEO).

Previous Research

My PhD research was with two ground-based UV-visible diffraction grating spectrometers deployed mainly at PEARL in Eureka, NU in the Canadian High Arctic, and also in Toronto and Vanscoy, SK (as part of the MANTRA campaigns). Using Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS), I retrieved stratospheric concentrations of ozone, NO2, BrO, and OClO. I performed very detailed comparisons with other UV-Vis instruments, leading to the certification of our two instruments by the UV-Visible Working Group of the Network for the Detection of Atmospheric Composition Change (NDACC). The data from PEARL were also used to validate the Atmospheric Chemistry Experiment (ACE) satellite. Serendipitously, I was also able to detect NO2 produced by lightning in the troposphere from some of the mid-latitude deployments.
