Glaciology & Cryosphere

We aim to understand the principal processes controlling glaciers, ice sheets and snow cover and to investigate how they could be affected by predicted climate change.

Glaciers, ice sheets and snow cover are intimately linked to the global climate system and will be highly sensitive to any changes such as a warming climate. Understanding how and at what rate the cryosphere responds to climate change is of fundamental importance to society.

We study contemporary systems and past ice sheets using a variety of field study, remote sensing and modelling techniques. We have projects based on the Greenland ice sheet, Antarctica, Patagonia, Iceland, FennoScandanavia, and the Alps, work with remote sensing platforms such as CryoSat, and create ice sheet models using numerical packages such as Elmer/Ice.
