International Social Sciences InstituteThe aim of the International Social Sciences Institute is to encourage scholars, both from the academic world and from the professions, to contribute to the intellectual life of the Faculty of Social Sciences as non-stipendiary Visiting Associates. It is envisaged that most Visiting Associates will be on study leave from other institutions of higher education. The Institute seeks to attract visitors at all stages of their careers. Invitations to Visiting Associates are extended after consultation with appropriate Departments within the Faculty of Social Sciences to ensure that there will be a relationship between the research on which each visitor is engaged and current interests within the Faculty. This procedure is intended to ensure that Visiting Associates will become part of the academic community in Edinburgh, and to avoid the risk of scholars coming here but finding nobody with whom they can discuss their work. The International Social Sciences Institute welcomes Visiting Associates in any area related to current research interests in the Faculty of Social Sciences, but especially those who may wish to contribute to discussion of the annual theme. From September 1995 to December 1996, the theme will be Boundaries and Identities. Conferences on associated topics will be held by the Centre of Canadian Studies on 3-5 May 1996 and by the Department of Social Anthropology on 25 and 26 October 1996. It is envisaged that the International Social Sciences Institute will also hold a major symposium during the year. Visiting Associates receive office accommodation, access to computing and library facilities and some basic assistance with research expenses, such as photocopying. Preference may be given to visitors who plan to base themselves in Edinburgh for a minimum period of three months. The International Social Sciences Institute operates year-round, but visitors should note that Departmental seminar programmes do not function between June and September. Visiting Associates have access to Edinburgh University Library, which is a member of CURL (the Consortium of University Research Libraries). Its holdings may be searched on EULIB, which is available on EDINFO through JANET and INTERNET. EDINFO also gives access to holdings of other research libraries in Edinburgh. Intending visitors are also advised to write in advance to the Librarian, National Library of Scotland, George IV Bridge, Edinburgh EH1 1EW. The University does not have housing for visiting academics, but Edinburgh has a large and active rental market, and the International Social Sciences Institute will attempt to advertise the needs of visitors as far as possible. The International Social Sciences Institute forms part of the School for Higher Studies in the Social Sciences, which includes the Graduate School and Research Centre for Social Sciences. The School is to be found in Surgeon's Square, located a short distance from the University's Old College quadrangle. The Institute is located in Chisholm House, which was built soon after 1764, a modern research community in an eighteenth century building. Intending visitors are asked to apply by letter, enclosing a curriculum vitae and an outline of proposed research, preferably limited to a single page for internal circulation. Applicants are asked to state when they propose to visit Edinburgh, and to supply the names and addresses of two academic referees to whom the Institute may write in confidence. It would be helpful if applicants would indicate any members of staff within the University of Edinburgh with whom they have personal contact or whose work appears relevant to their interests. Academic staff are listed in the University of Edinburgh Calendar and in the Commonwealth Universities Yearbook, both widely available in libraries. Applications are encouraged from scholars with no current connection with the University. For further information contact:
