Demonstration of the Interface between Arc/Info and the Web

Presented below are two demonstrations of the interface built in Edinburgh between ESRI's Arc/Info package and the WWW server. This interface was built by Phil Massam as part of his Master's Research Project.

First available in the early Summer of July 1994, it represents the first working, interactive interface between a WWW Server and a GIS. Although this demonstration provides only a proof-of-concept, the underlying software is sufficiently general purpose to be able to adapted to a range of specific applications.

The first demonstration shows that maps can be built on-the-fly as requested by a user query.

The second demonstrates interaction. You, the user, can build your own map from the demonstration Arc/Info coverages held here. You can choose which components you wish to display, choose appropriate symbologies and so on.

In both cases there will be a delay of around one minute while maps are build on the server before they are sent out to your client.

** IMPORTANT: PLEASE DO NOT ABANDON EITHER OF THESE DEMONSTATIONS
PART WAY THROUGH, THE OLD WEB SERVER WE ARE RETAINING
TO PRESERVE THIS DEMONSTRATION IS NOT RELIABLE AND MAY
BREAK, REQUIRING A MANUAL RESET BY US.
