Communal and Neighbourhood Spaces in the City

Dr Eric Laurier, Dr Nina Morris, and Professor Jane Jacobs

In living together in the dense centres of cities we are presented with a series of spaces that are communally owned by our buildings or, in other ways, belong to the neighbourhood, such as lobbies, lanes, walls, sheds, signage, lifts, garages and, in particular, green spaces. Questions arise as to how we do, and should; use, manage, design, maintain and share those spaces. Applications are invited that will examine ethnographically or historically aspects of this topic such as: neighbourliness, resident committees, landscape design, neighbourhood projects, neighbourhood disputes, redevelopments of abandoned communal land, tipping & rubbish dumping, gardening, shared temporary dwelling etc.
