Application Guidelines - PhD in Human Geography

Please complete the University online application form
When you complete the online form you have the opportunity to upload the following supporting documents:

• two academic letters of reference on headed notepaper
• evidence of your qualifications from undergraduate degree level
• a two page statement on your intended research
• evidence of English if English is not your first language (IELTS at 6.5 or above or TOEFL at 580 or above)
• a full curriculum vitae

Statement on intended research project
The HGRG welcomes proposals for postgraduate research in any of our specialist research themes. Your application should outline your proposed research, or indicate your interest to work on one of the pre-specified research topics.

If you wish to work on a topic you have devised that relates to our specialist research themes, then your application needs to include a short research proposal. It should be no longer than 2 sides of A4, and should give a brief but clear description of:

• the proposed research topic and its aims
• the relevance of the proposed research to current scholarship
• the proposed methodology
• the probable resource requirements of the project (indication only)
• why this topic is of interest to you in terms of your experience to date.

If you wish to work on a pre-specified topic, then your application needs to include a statement of your reasons for being interested in that topic and some indication of the direction you might follow with that topic.

If you may feel that you would like to discuss the topic with a probable prospective supervisor, please feel free to do so.
