Computing Introduction

There are several events timetabled for new students in week 0. There is no assessed teaching in this week, as required by University regulations. However, we do provide a variety of sessions to introduce you to the computing facilities in the School of GeoSciences. You are very strongly advised to attend these sessions, especially the morning ones. Lack of understanding of material presented in these sessions will not be regarded as a good excuse for work handed in late or poorly presented.

The Wednesday and Thursday sessions are in the Computing Labs, Institute of Geography, Drummond Street. This is in the town centre, not at Kings Buildings. The handouts etc. for these sessions can be found here.

The Friday session is in Room 301, Crew Building, immediately followed by a FREE LUNCH

Reporting problems

Note that if you have problems with the computing facilities, you should report them to ithelp@geos.ed.ac.uk . The IT support team are busy people so do not bother them unnecessarily. However, in many cases the only way that they can tell that there is a problem is if you report it.

Using your own computer

Several people have asked questions about use of their own computers, both on and off site. I am assembling some answers here.

Writing your reports and inserting figures into them.

Word Processors

You may use Microsoft Word, OpenOffice or LaTeX for written reports during the course of your degree programme. We expect the figures in your work to be printed clearly. This Open Office 2 document and this Microsoft Word document (which says the same thing) explain some of the issues.

LaTeX

You may prefer LaTeX to a word processor. You can find some examples in this folder.

  • The file basic is a very short LaTeX document to get you started. The LaTeX source is in basic.tex
  • The file thesis_in_latex is a detailed description of how to use LaTeX for your coursework and your dissertation.
  • The file huge_thesis is an example of how to use LaTeX for a very large document. Few M.Sc dissertations get this long, but you might find the information useful if you go on to do a Ph.D. The various source files for this example are in this directory.
