What will this workshop achieve?

The primary outcome of the workshop will be the finalisation of a major publication describing the process for implementing, managing and sustaining major carbon sequestration projects in tropical developing countries. This document will relate specifically to the dry tropical forests of Africa, however many of the themes will be transferable to other areas.

How can carbon markets work for tropical developing countries?

This conference will provide information to those wanting to learn more about the process of implementing and managing sustainable carbon sequestration projects in tropical developing countries. Issues of risk, permanence, governance and methodologies for carbon sink analysis will be covered in the programme.

Savanna woodlands are important to the livelihoods of many people and are becoming increasingly threatened by deforestation, fire and climate change. The market for ecosystem services, in particular terrestrial carbon offsets is important for its role in regulating the global climate, maintaining biodiversity and promoting sustainable land-use options. The capacity of savanna areas to sequester carbon therefore has potential for poverty alleviation and development in rural communities.
